One of Game of Thrones’ most intriguing characters is Melisandre (Carice van Houten). What are her motivations? What does she see in Stannis (Stephen Dillane)? Why is she so comfortable in the nude? With so many questions regarding her, should we be worried that she’ll be killed off in Season 5 before we get any answers?

If you’re worried about Mel perishing in Season 5, don’t be. Unless the show takes a sharp left turn from her arc in the books, Mel’s about as safe as safe can be. But since she’ll be alive and well in Season 5, she’s going to be pretty busy.

In the books, Mel begins to come under the impression that Jon Snow (Kit Harington), not Stannis, is the messiah she seeks. We caught a bit of foreshadowing of this in the show when Mel and Jon glimpsed each other through the flames during the funeral following the Battle at the Wall.

Also, Mel is still aching for some king’s blood after Davos swiped Gendry from her, and in the books she finds some in the form of Mance Rayder’s infant son... until Jon Snow pulls a Davos and sends the baby to the Reach and replaces it with Gilly’s. In the show, though, we have a feeling they’re going to skip the baby swapping saga and instead have Mel show a keen interest in Shireen, since she already made a point to Selyse that Stannis’ daughter must accompany them to the Wall. If Mel kills Shireen, there’s a slim chance that Stannis might murder Melisandre in return, but we don’t see that happening. Our educated guess is that Mel lives to see Season 6, where she plays a big part in forming the series’ end game.
