The nominees for the 2014 Emmys have been announced, and Lena Headey picked up her first nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Cersei Lannister. Here are the reasons we think she should win.
1. She struggled this year, and Lena killed it. Cersei had her toughest season yet with her son dying in Episode 2. Lena conveyed Cersei’s emotions adeptly, showing the anguish of losing a child coupled with her desire to find someone she could blame, and finding that in Tyrion, her least favorite person anyway. We felt for her one second, and hated her the next, and yet the character makes perfect sense.
2. We love to hate her. Although Cersei had a (somewhat) sympathetic season, she still managed to mix in a number of her trademark hateable moments. Every action of hers at Joffrey’s wedding, prior to his death, was amazing, as she was going down swinging as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Her work during Tyrion’s trial as well, being a manipulator while also being sincere, worked on a number of levels, making us think of Tyrion’s line about his sister, “Making honest feelings do dishonest work is what Cersei does best.”
3. She had a difficult romantic assignment. The love story between Jaime and Cersei was by some accounts bungled by the showrunners in Season 4, with Jaime raping Cersei one minute and calmly chatting with her the next. But Lena did a great job with the material she was given, and showed the cracks forming in her relationship with her brother before sheer desperation forces her back into his arms willingly.
