There is fear by some fans of the A Song of Ice and Fire books that either the books will never be finished, or that the show that’s based on them, Game of Thrones, will spoil their ending first. But there is a third possibility we should be worried about: What if Game of Thrones gets cancelled?

According to HBO president Michael Lombardo, that’s not something we need to be concerned about. Lombardo was asked if anything “short of a nuclear war” would prevent GoT from ending on its own terms. Lombardo says in response, “No … we’re committed to it and [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] are committed to it.” Phew. It sounds like even if the books never do get finished, at least one version of the story will be told.

As far as the show passing the books, which almost definitely will occur, Lombardo’s not worried about that either. “Obviously [author George R. R. Martin] is an integral part of the creative team,” Lombardo reveals. “So next season every move is being choreographed very closely with him. Certainly after next year we’ll have to figure it out with George, but we’re not concerned about it.”
