There’s been a lot of chatter recently about Game of Thrones finishing things off with a movie, or a series of movies, but how realistic is this possibility? Can it really happen?
A Song of Ice and Fire series author George R. R. Martin seems to hope a movie could happen, since he's brought the idea up in several interviews. He now seems to be distancing himself a bit from the concept though, judging by a recent Q & A at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival.
“Somehow misconception is getting out that I’m the one that’s urging that we end the series with a movie. Let me make it clear that I’m not, I think it’s a good idea, but it’s not my idea to end this with a series of big movies,” George revealed. “The question that we face with the show is that the books continue to get bigger and bigger, and the show really can’t get much bigger... A big fantasy motion picture... you have 200 million dollars for three hours, while one of our shows we have like 60 million dollars for ten hours. So there’s a huge difference, and I happen to know ... that there will be some major battles coming up, and some dragon action, and some stuff with The Wall and White Walkers that looks to be kind of expensive. How are we gonna do that, I don’t know.”
While George makes a point to say the movies aren’t his idea, he still seems to be quite in favor of the idea. Unfortunately for him, HBO decidedly is not.
At the TCA press tour HBO president Michael Lombardo told critics, “There’s no conversations going on about a movie.” Since HBO is a television network, it makes sense for them to want to conclude the series on their preferred medium: Television.
