The mystery of just who Jon Snow's (Kit Harington) mother is has plagued Game of Thrones since the show’s beginning, but maybe we’ve been asking the wrong questions. Perhaps what we should really be wondering is who Jon Snow’s father is, because according to Sean Bean, it’s not Ned Stark.
Sean recently talked to Vulture about the possibility that he could return to the show in flashback scenes, possibly through Bran having time-traveling visions.
During that convo, Sean said, “I've definitely got some unfinished business that needs to be resolved there. I'm obviously not Jon Snow's dad. And you need that to be revealed at some point, don't you? So Bran would kind of be the one having the flashback, and he would see Ned praying, right? And revealing those things?”
While Sean seems a little unsure about just how the flashback scene would work, he seems quite certain that Ned is not Jon’s father. So who could it be?
The most popular theory circulating among fans of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series is that Jon is the son of Ned’s sister Lyanna and Dany’s brother, Rhaegar Targaryen. There is loads of evidence to support this theory in the books, but almost none in the show.
We also haven’t heard anything about Jon Snow’s mother on the show in a long time, so maybe the show is taking the character in a different direction. We guess we’ll just have to keep our eyes out for Ned Stark praying in Season 5 to reveal the truth!
