When it comes to Game of Thrones, especially during the first couple seasons, few characters drew as much hatred and criticism as naive and gullible Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner). Her character consistently made poor decisions that put her family at risk, and she didn’t shake the image of being a “stupid little girl” until recently. Sophie Turner, the actress who plays Sansa, still hasn’t forgotten about that early vitriol from fans.
In an interview with Nylon, Sophie, now 18, talks about how she used to Google herself in the show’s early days. “I used to, when I was 13,” Sophie reveals. “I read all the reviews of myself and everyone hated me and my character. These days, my publicist sends me web links of anything that has to do with me and I can choose whether to read it or not, which is a much better process.”
She also describes how the massive difference in popularity between her character and that of her onscreen sister, Arya (Maisie Williams) used to get her down. “When I was younger, Maisie, who plays my sister, and I were in scenes together and people loved her character and they hated mine, and it really used to affect me,” Sophie says.
Ultimately, Sophie came to the realization that if you hate Sansa, that’s your problem, not hers. “People see their own faults in her character, and they don’t like facing their own weaknesses,” Sophie opines. “I think if anyone was a 13-year-old girl put in her situation, they would probably act exactly the same.”
Haters gonna hate, Sophie. Though we have a feeling Sansa is going to have a lot less haters going forward.
