Doran Martell is the head of House Martell, the Lord of Sunspear, and the Prince of Dorne. How can Dorne have a prince, you ask? Dornish Law recognizes the members of House Martell as Princes and Princesses since they were never conquered by the Targaryens; they joined the Seven Kingdoms via marriage. Hence the Martell’s words: Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken. Doran is the eldest member of the Martell family (he’s Oberyn’s older brother), therefore he gets the title of Prince of Dorne.
Doran is much more level-headed than Oberyn, but his motives are the same. It is said that if Oberyn is the snake in the grass, Doran is the grass that hides the snake. Doran also has gout, which makes it very difficult for him to walk. In the books, Doran has three children: a daughter, Arianne, the oldest and heir to Dorne, and two sons, Quentyn and Trystane, the latter being the youngest who is betrothed to Myrcella Baratheon. It looks like the show is cutting out both Arianne and Quentyn, leaving Trystane as the sole heir to Dorne.
Doran should be a great addition to the show and should go along way toward making the Martells as major player moving forward!
