At San Diego Comic-Con, Game of Thrones revealed some of its new cast members for Season 5. Perhaps the most intriguing new addition is the bizarrely named High Sparrow, portrayed by Jonathan Pryce (Pirates of the Caribbean). So who is this guy?

Not much is known about the High Sparrow’s background, and no one even knows his real name. Also, despite his bird-inspired name, the High Sparrow has nothing to do with the Three-Eyed Raven.
Instead, his title derives from the religious group to which he belongs: the Sparrows. The Sparrows are militant, fundamentalist followers of the Faith of the Seven, and as you’ve probably guessed, the High Sparrow is their leader. Since the Faith of the Seven has largely been in the background up to this point, especially compared to the Lord of Light and the Old Gods, how important could this guy possibly be?
Pretty important, it turns out. If the books are anything to go by, The Sparrows are going to make a lot of noise next season, and the High Sparrow will be elected as the new High Septon of the Seven Kingdoms. The previous High Septon was pretty irrelevant, but the High Sparrow is anything but. He’s very strong-willed and pious, and he will likely stir things up quite a bit in King’s Landing in Season 5. We’re looking forward to it!
