Northern Irish actor JJ Murphy passed away on Friday at the age of 86, just four days after filming scenes for Game of Thrones Season 5. The cause of death has not been announced.

Murphy was set to make his first appearance on the show as Ser Denys Mallister of the Night’s Watch, and still had some scenes left to film. He reportedly had told friends he was excited to be a part of the show and to be filming in his home country. It is not clear at this time if the show will recast his part or rewrite his still-unfilmed scenes (though we hope it’s the latter, we’d like to see him have his moment in the sun).

Murphy had a long career as a theater actor, having first trained with the Ulster Group Theatre School in 1948. He also had a lengthy film career, with roles in such films as Cal (1984), Mickybo and Me (2004), Puckoon (2004), Angela’s Ashes (1999), and the upcoming big-budget Dracula Untold.

Condolences and fond memories of a fine actor and gentlemen have been pouring in from all who knew Murphy, with his agent Philip Young stating, “I have never encountered a man with more spirit, passion, and love for his craft.” A funeral for Murphy will be held on Wednesday in Belfast.
