Game of Thrones Season 5 doesn’t even begin until next spring, but that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate on how it will end! Here are our guesses for the final scene of next season, based on A Song of Ice and Fire.

Beware the Ides of Winter. Based on the books, sometime in Season 5, Jon’s going to be voted in as Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. He’s going to have a very controversial tenure, mainly because he treats the wildlings like human beings, and his brothers of the Night’s Watch aren’t going to be very happy with him. The last straw for them comes when Jon receives a letter from Winterfell, supposedly from Ramsay Bolton, threatening him, and Jon decides to go to his old homestead and confront his fellow bastard. His brothers then gang up on Jon and stab him a bunch of times, leaving his fate unclear.

Fly like a Drogon. Dany has her own intense moment coming up, one that the show appears to be preparing to film. Based on the books, Dany will probably marry Hizdahr zo Loraq in Season 5, not out of love, but as a way to stabilize the increasingly violent Meereen. One of the first compromises of their union is to reopen the Meereenese fighting pits, and during the first event held there Drogon drops in and starts killing people. Dany rushes to stop him, and to prevent soldiers from harming him, and she ends up climbing on his back and flying away. Though it isn’t Dany’s last scene in A Dance with Dragons, it’s certainly her most thrilling, and would make a great closer for the season.

Varys shows his cards. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have hinted that

Varys’s plans will become known in Season 5, which has us wondering what those plans are. The epilogue of A Dance with Dragons features Varys and his “little birds” assassinating Grand Maester Pycelle and Kevan Lannister while revealing that his plan is to put Aegon Targaryen, revealed to be alive in the book, on the throne. Since we haven’t heard any casting news for Aegon, or any news about Kevan returning, the show may change Varys’s allegiance to Dany, who was his backup plan in the books anyway. If this is the case, we could still see Varys murder Pycelle and whomever is serving Cersei as Hand. Varys actually doing something so brazen would be a shocking way to end the season.

White Walkers. The show has already moved past the books when it comes to the White Walkers with their reveal of the Night King and the baby factory in Season 4, so it’s likely that trend continues in Season 5. The White Walkers don’t appear at all in the fourth or fifth books of the series, but we don’t think the show is going to forget about them like George R. R. Martin apparently has. Maybe Season 5 ends with them forming up at the Wall, ready to invade the Seven Kingdoms. That would be a shocker even book fans wouldn’t see coming!
