Game of Thrones has never shied away from offing main character and fan favorites, but are the A Song of Ice and Fire books — and so probably the TV show too — about to get even bloodier? Recently, series author George R. R. Martin hinted that could be the case.

At a recent event in London, George warned that the as yet unfinished final two books in the series could see more main characters die because more and more characters are no longer essential to the overall plot structure.

"I have a large number of important characters who I switch between to tell the entirety of the story, and that limits who I can kill," George explained (via BuzzFeed). "Sometimes there’s only one character who’s my eye in a particular location, and if I kill that character everything going on in that particular subplot is going to be lost."

Obviously, this dynamic gives certain characters a fair amount of safety ( it also explains why King's Landing is a particularly deadly place to be since there are almost always multiple viewpoint characters there) but that's all changing now.

"Now it’s getting to the point where the story is beginning to delta back in, and the viewpoint characters are occasionally meeting up with each other now and being in the same point at the same time, which gives me a lot more flexibility for killing people," George concluded.

So, in conclusion: Be worried. Be very, very worried.
