Not to depress you when we’re so close to the March 31 premiere of Game of Thrones Season 3, but there will be slightly less Tyrion this season. Sorry! Our Giant of Lannister will still be featured heavily, just not so heavily as, say, The Mother of Dragons.
GoT is on the new cover of Entertainment Weekly, and in the great interview with exciting teasers for the rest of the season, we’re reminded that there are 27 regular cast members, so obviously there’s going to be some ebb and flow, even with the main cast. Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen would definitely be considered main characters. Season 2 gave Tyrion a great showcase while Dany was forced to endure the theft of her dragons. Not cool. Expect Dany’s reign to get much more epic this season, while poor Tyrion suffers indignities he does not deserve. Such is life.
As Emilia Clarke (Dany) told EW of her character, “She hits the ground running: Dany has to prove to herself and others that she knows what she’s doing.” Dany also had to learn a second fantasy language: High Valyrian, in addition to Dothraki. Top that for coolness!
As the EW story notes, “With characters like Dany gaining screen time, others will unavoidably see theirs scaled back. Peter Dinklage, who plays the wittily cunning Tyrion Lannister, was last season’s focal point as he fended off an invasion of his scheming family’s stronghold at King’s Landing. In Season 3, though, the Emmy winner’s role is slightly less prominent. ‘I don’t mind,’ Dinklage says, then adds as a dry Tyrion-like aside, ‘My character probably minds.’”
Do you mind? Which characters are key to you, and need to stay prominent every season (if possible)?
