Season 4 Promo Poster
Tonight's episode of Game of Thrones, "The Mountain and the Viper," brought about the death of the latter: Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal), the sex machine of Dorne. As is the way of things with this series, be it in book or television form, no character is too big or important that she's safe from the business end of an arrow or blade or, in this case, the crushing weight of The Mountain's fists in what was probably the most graphic death so far in the series.
Author George R. R. Martin has said time and time again that this is totally on purpose. He wants the stakes to be real… and it works.
"As a reader or viewer of television or film, I always like unexpected things. I always like the suspense to be real," he explained in a June 2013 interview on Conan. "We have all seen the movies where the hero is in trouble. He is surrounded by 20 people, but you know he is going to get away because he is the hero. You don't really feel any fear for him. I want my readers and my viewers to be afraid when my characters are in danger. I want them to be afraid to turn the next page because the next character may not survive it."
So far the body count for Season 4 is definitely mounting. Flip through the gallery to find out who bit it tonight, along with the rest of this season's dearly departed.
