Perhaps best known for her portrayal of loyal knight Brienne of Tarth in HBO’s Game of Thrones, British actress Gwendoline Christie has also played supporting roles in Terry Gilliam's 2009 film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, the BBC TV production The Seven Ages of Britain and the 2012 TV series Wizards vs Aliens.
Despite her critically acclaimed performance in Game of Thrones, Gwendoline had no desire to be an actress growing up. As a young girl, she actually trained to be a gymnast in her hometown — a hamlet near the South Downs in southern England — until a spinal injury forced her to withdraw from the sport. Shortly after, Gwendoline took up acting, and she eventually graduated from Drama Centre London in 2005.
At 6’3’’, Gwendoline has admitted that her striking physical stature made her feel “pretty genderless” at times, which is one of the many reasons she connected to the character of Brienne of Tarth. In order to prepare for her role as a warrior in the HBO series, Gwendoline not only wore unisex clothing to help her get into Brienne’s more masculine mindset, but she also gained 14 pounds of muscle mass thanks to an intensive training schedule.
Gwendoline was interested in the role of Brienne since she read George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. “Oh my god, it’s what actors dream of; to find a part that fits like a glove, that you can totally connect with,” she told Stylist UK about portraying Brienne. “But also, as we discussed, it’s the most extraordinary opportunity to portray this kind of outsider that hasn’t really been explored much, particularly on mainstream TV.”
The actress made her Game of Thrones debut in Season 2, Episode 3: “What Is Dead May Never Die.”
1. She isn’t aware of her actual age, as neither she nor her mother know her birth date.
2. She once said that had acting not worked out, she would have become a nun!
3. For her role as Brienne, she trained in combat, sword fighting, and horse riding.
