Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), House Stark's eldest daughter, is one of HBO's Game of Thrones’ most controversial characters. Some love her (*cough* us *cough*), some think she's too passive. But whatever the case, there's no denying that Sansa is a key player in the game of thrones — even if she's not always aware of it.

In Season 1, Sansa was thrilled to move to King's Landing and get engaged to Joffrey Baratheon. In her mind, she was living every girl's dream: she was literally going to be princess, and then queen one day. Her naive admiration of the court and schoolgirl crush on Joffrey eventually cost her everything, when she revealed her father's plan to escape the city to Cersei Lannister. Ned was arrested, and Sansa learned exactly how cruel her fiance really is when Joffrey ordered Ned's head cut off, despite his assurance that he'd be merciful.

During Season 2 Sansa was kept as a hostage by the Lannisters, forced to renounce her family and remain engaged to Joffrey, who took out his sadistic impulses on his unfortunate fiancee. She was almost raped in a riot, but the Hound saved her. She also had her first period, meaning she's a woman, ready to be married. Fortunately for her, the Battle of the Blackwater happened before she could wed Joffrey; after the battle, Joffrey threw Sansa aside in favor of Margaery Tyrell, much to her joy.

However, things went south for her in Season 3. At first she was doing well. Suddenly, instead of a hopeless situation she had two apparent escape routes: Littlefinger offered to ferret her off on one of his boats north, and the Tyrells proposed that she marry Loras (who's gay, a fact Sansa remains blissfully unaware of). Unfortunately, when she turned down Littlefinger's offer in favor of Loras, he ratted her out to the Lannisters; to thwart the Tyrell plot, Tywin Lannister decided that Tyrion and Sansa should get married, to both of their distress. She remains trapped in King's Landing for now.

Sansa was introduced in Season 1, Episode 1: "Winter Is Coming."
