Juan Pablo Galavis: A Gay Bachelor Would Be a Bad Example For Kids to Watch — They’re “More Pervert”

Ay dios mio, Juan Pablo Galavis... The 2014 Bachelor may have put his soccer-playing foot in his mouth when explaining why ABC shouldn’t cast a gay Bachelor — including the suggestion that homosexuals are "more pervert."

The single dad shared his views when talking to The TV Page at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Friday, January 17.

Listen to his comments here:

The TV Page asked JPG if he felt it would be a good idea to ever have a gay or bisexual Bachelor. His immediate answer was “No,” adding, “I respect them, but honestly, I don’t think it’s a good example for kids to watch that on TV." (Side note: Isn't everything about The Bachelor a bad example for kids? Why would kids be watching one man date 25 women, or one woman with 25 men?)

As Juan Pablo continued, “[P]eople have their husband and wife and kids, and that is how we are brought up. Now there [are] fathers having kids and all that, and it is hard for me to understand that too, in the sense of a household having ... two parents sleeping in the same bed and the kid going into bed."

Juan Pablo, who is father of a nearly 5-year-old daughter himself, said it’s confusing to him, in a sense, but he respects them for wanting to have kids, too. “They want to be parents. So it's a scale, where do you put it on the scale? Where's the thin line to cross or not? You have to respect everybody's desires, opinions and way of living. But it would be too hard for TV. Too much, too much."

The reporter seemed to agree, saying it probably would be too much, adding that there might be a backlash. Everyone has a right to his or her opinion, but JPG’s next comments are what really raised eyebrows.

“There’s this thing about gay people that, it seems to me — and I don’t know if I’m mistaken or not. I've met, I have a lot of friends like that — they’re more pervert, in a sense? And to me the show will be too strong, too hard to watch on TV.”

Now, you do have to factor in his status as a Spanish speaker raised in Venezuela who often has trouble communicating in English even when not discussing controversial topics. Just last month, the Season 18 Bachelor was on Good Morning America and needed a definition of “sizzling” to understand it meant he was “hot.” That doesn’t mean his point wasn’t made exactly as stated here, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Juan Pablo tried to clarify this himself, even without ABC jumping in with their take on things.

If the recent Duck Dynasty hullabaloo proves anything, it’s that people have strong opinions on both sides of the sexuality debate. There may be some people who agree with JPG and like him even more for saying this, while others will be disgusted.

How do you feel about Juan Pablo’s opinion that ABC shouldn’t cast a gay Bachelor? How about his take that it would be a bad example for kids or the “pervert” comment?
