George R. R. Martin Calls Some Fans “Annoying”

It seems the more time that passes without The Winds of Winter being released, the more contentious the relationship becomes between author George R. R. Martin and some of his fans.

The author, who skyrocketed to new heights of fame after HBO’s Game of Thrones introduced a whole new set of fans to his A Song of Ice and Fire book series, hasn’t always handled his newfound celebrity well, especially when it comes to the added pressure from fans to finish his masterwork. Recently, he infamously gave those fans speculating about his death a “f—k you” in an interview, and now he has labeled some fans “annoying,” while still maintaining that most of his fans are great and respectful.

“I have the best fans in the world for the most part,” George tells The Independent. “There is a minority who are annoying, it has to be said. But for every one of those, there are 500 who are just great and who are very supportive. They buy the books and come out in their thousands when I do a signing.”

George then adds that while the pressure from fans to release his next book gets to him, it’s better than no one caring about his writing. “With most writers, no one gives a s—t when their book is coming out and even when it does come out, no one cares,” George says. “I would much rather have my problem than their problem.”
