Demi Lovato on Getting Sober: “I Did it For My Little Sister”

Demi Lovato has come a long way since she entered a rehab facility in 2010. And although she was obviously there to seek help for her drug and alcohol addiction, as well as her struggles with depression and an eating disorder, there was another big reason why she knew she needed to get clean: so she could be a good role model for her younger sister, Madison.

Demi and the 11-year-old Madison have always been close — Madison even followed in her big sister’s footsteps when she joined the cast of Desperate Housewives for six years as Eva Longoria’s daughter.

The last time that I had an intervention, it was my management, my entire team, manager, lawyers, everyone, and my parents coming into a room saying if you don’t get sober,” Demi said in a recent interview with Access Hollywood. “My mom specifically said, ‘You know, we’re going to move back to Texas and you’re not going to be able to be around your little sister.’”

Setting a good example for a younger sister is one of the best reasons we can think of for anyone to work to get clean. And since Demi was released from rehab in 2011, she’s made it her mission to speak openly about her struggles in case she can help others through her experience.

And Demi’s mom, Dianna, felt that keeping Demi away from Madison was only part of her job as a mother to protect her — and it was a good wake-up call for Demi, too.

“I had to set an example for Madison… I had to protect her and [Demi] knew that,” Dianna said. “So when I said, ‘I’m moving back to Texas,’ she knew that I finally meant it that time, and that’s when we all sat down with her and said, ‘This is it, you have to make a change or we’re all going our separate ways because if you don’t want this career, we’re not going to want it for you.'"
