According to the site, Edward, who also had memorable roles in The Wolf of Wall Street, The Aviator, and Richie Rich as well as a recent guest stint on The Good Wife, had been battling brain cancer in recent months. His family tellsTMZ that the Washington D.C. native was in the ICU of a New York hospital for the past three and half weeks.

When Edward’s condition didn’t improve his family made the difficult decision to take him off the respirator, and he ultimately passed away today, December 31.

The 71-year-old was married twice and his second wife, Star, says the actor is survived by three children, including a stepson named Rory who is a noted chef in California.

Edward’s career in film, television, and movies spanned over 40 years. He was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the made-for-TV movies, Eleanor and Franklin and Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years, which aired in 1976 and 1977 respectively.

None of Edward’s co-stars have weighed in on his death just yet, but we’re sure they’ll share some memories and kind words in the coming days so be sure to check back with Wetpaint Entertainment for updates.

Our condolences go out to Edward’s family during this difficult time.
