UPDATE: In light of Cory Monteith's (Finn) tragic passing, the Glee Season 5 premiere has been pushed back until Thursday, September 26.
School’s out for summer. But luckily, school is NOT out forever. Glee Season 5 will return in the fall —but not nearly as soon as we'd anticipated.
Fox just announced the premiere date for Season 5, and we have to admit we're surprised. The Fox hit will premiere its fifth season on Thursday, September 19 at 9 p.m., according to an official press release. Why are we so surprised? Well, FOX entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly had hinted during a conference call with reporters that he thinks Glee and its lead-in, The X Factor would likely “get out of the gate two weeks early.”
Last year, Glee premiere on Thursday, September 13, which would have put this year’s premiere on our around Thursday, August 29. Instead, Fox threw us for a loop, premiering our favorite high school musical dramedy nearly a week later than last year.
We're not sure if that still means Fox plans to go forward with their new show schedule plan. Fox had previously announced their intention to break Glee Season 5 into two distinct chunks. The first half will begin in September 2013, but the second half won’t start until the spring of 2014. While that schedule would eliminate a lot of the smaller hiatuses of previous seasons, we have to admit winter will be bleaker with no Glee.
Between those two half seasons, FOX has said they intend to air Rake, a legal drama starring Greg Kinnear, about a “criminal defense attorney whose chaotic and self-destructive personal life often gets in the way of his professional one."
It’s an interesting move on Fox's part, to be sure, but the majority of fans still seem to be willing to give it a shot!
