But when Huffington Post writer Amelia told the story of how her 8-year-old son met his “boyfriend” Darren, we have to admit that our hearts melted just about instantly.
Back in February 2012, Amelia wrote a HuffPo article titled, “When Your 7-Year-Old Son Announces, 'I'm Gay',” that quickly went viral. Her son had long been open about his huge crush on Darren’s Glee character, Blaine, but Amelia told a friend that she wasn’t going to say her son was straight or gay just because of that.
"Yes, I am," he chimed in. "Am what, baby?" she asked. "Gay. I'm gay.”
Her son’s confidence in his identity, and the ease and happiness with with he acknowledges it, has made Amelia’s posts the center of plenty of attention. Now, the proud mama is sharing the story of when her young son recently got the chance to meet his celebrity crush.
This year, all her son wanted for Christmas was to meet Blaine from Glee. People would occasionally asked Amelia if the two had ever met. “I usually laughed off the question,” she writes. “Of course he hadn't. We're a family from the Midwest, where television actors are the furthest thing from our reality.”
Then Darren’s “Listen Up!” concert tour made a stop in Chicago on June 8, and Amelia’s son finally got the chance to meet the man of his dreams. As they waited to meet up with Darren, Amelia says that her son was “so nervous and anxious that he was practically jumping out of his skin.”
“And then he was there, and my son met his first love. It was adorable. Darren Criss was charming and lovely, and my son was so shy but happy.”
Amelia writes that her son and Darren’s conversation is not really hers to share. “Maybe someday, when my kid is older, he'll write about it, but until then, it remains as it should be: between him and Darren.”
Have you melted yet? Have you dissolved into a helpless puddle on the floor? Because we have. This is about the sweetest thing we’ve ever heard.
So don’t mind us: We’ll just be over here in the corner shedding quiet tears. It’s at times like this when our faith in humanity is suddenly restored.
