When Glee closes a door, it opens a window. Case in point: Five Glee stars have been upgraded to series regulars in the wake of numerous cast departures from the show. Who knew we could be so happy and so sad at the same time?
As it revs back into production for Season 5, Glee has promoted Melissa Benoist (Marley), Jacob Artist (Jake), Becca Tobin (Kitty), and The Glee Project stars Blake Jenner (Ryder) and Alex Newell (Unique) to series-regular status, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Congrats, you five!
This follows the less-exciting news that five original cast members — Heather Morris (Brittany), Mark Salling (Puck), Amber Riley (Mercedes), Harry Shum Jr. (Mike), and Dianna Agron (Quinn) — would not be returning, with the exception of occasional drop-ins.
Add to that the fact that Jayma Mays (Emma) just got cast in a new CBS sitcom, and you can see why we were in desperate need of a little good news.
So the thought of last year's three New Directions newbies and the two Glee Project alums becoming series regulars is music to our ears! We've really fallen in love with all five of those characters, so it's great to have them back.
And while we're excited for Blake and Alex, we're worried that this might mean that Samuel Larsen (Joe) will be a non-entity next season. He had all been written out of the show of late, and the fact that Glee is getting rid of so many bit players can't be a good sign for him.
Still, given that Damian McGinty (Rory) wasn't able to make the jump to series regular status — we still miss you, Damian! — we're glad that at least two Glee Project contestants have now been able to.
This means we're even more excited for Season 5 to begin on September 19! And granted, we're a little miffed that Stoner Brett isn't a series regular yet, but we suppose we'll let that slide. We promise not to let our anger lead to any busters getting popped.
