It’s a busy week for Glee star Melissa Benoist (Marley): First we learn that she and co-star Blake Jenner (Ryder) are engaged, and now she’s landed a movie role in a highly anticipated film! Not too shabby.
Melissa’s career path continues moving upward: Deadline reports that the 24-year-old actress has been cast in the music-centric film Imagine, which will start shooting soon in Los Angeles. Melissa is set to play Jamie, a desk clerk at a hotel who gets to spend some quality time with her favorite rock star. Sounds like a great role for her, and a definite change of pace from the mousier Marley!
Melissa joins a cast that is absolutely brimming with talent, including Al Pacino as the aforementioned rock star who decides to live his life with more meaning and tracks down his estranged son. Also signed on are Jennifer Garner, Annette Bening, Christopher Plummer, Bobby Cannavale, and Drake & Josh’s Josh Peck. Whew!
We’ve actually read the script for this dramedy film — which is written and directed by Dan Fogelman, who wrote Crazy Stupid Love — and we are so excited that Melissa is going to be in it. It definitely has the chance to be a breakout hit in the vein of Little Miss Sunshine — not to mention that it being based around music makes it a natural fit for a Glee star. We approve!
This will be Melissa’s first film role since 2008’s indie Tennessee — which no one saw, even though it co-starred Mariah Carey. So between this new film and Melissa’s recent engagement to fellow Glee star Blake — after they both were bumped up to series-regular status on Glee last month — we think a celebration is in order. Congrats, Melissa — and to paraphrase Mariah, we think you and Blake definitely belong together!
