As we wait to officially hear what led to Cory Monteith’s (Finn) untimely death at age 31, TMZ reports that sources tell them while the Glee star remained sober on set, he returned to bad habits whenever he traveled north of the border.
The Canadian native made no secret of his longtime battle with drugs and alcohol. Cory started using as a teenager and first went to rehab at the tender age of 19. Although sources say he was committed to remaining sober after his most recent rehab stint just three months ago, did Cory slip when visiting friends in Vancouver, B.C.?
The Canadian city was where he liked to party, TMZ reports: “Our sources say Cory’s resolve to stay clean dissipated whenever he returned to his native Canada. That’s where he became a drug addict with a serious drinking problem.”
In LA, the support of his Glee cast members including girlfriend Lea Michele (Rachel) kept his demons at bay, but whenever he visited Canada TMZ says Cory’s family knew “he reverted back.” Their efforts to help, however, were “in vain” with Cory growing distant whenever they reached out.
The police have yet to confirm if Cory did indeed die of drug- or alcohol-related causes, but various substances were supposedly found in his hotel room. Whatever the cause may be — and the toxicology reports should be released shortly — Cory’s death joins a sad list of equally bright stars whose lights burned out too soon.
