Can you imagine how you would react upon learning — via phone call, nonetheless — that your longtime boyfriend had died of an apparent drug overdose? That is the situation that Glee star Lea Michele (Rachel) found herself in at 10pm on July 13, when a late night phone call informed her that Cory Monteith (Finn) had died in his Vancouver hotel room.
Cory and Lea hadn’t seen each other for a couple weeks. After the pair returned from a trip to NYC, he’d jetted off for Japan, then gone straight to his hometown of Vancouver. She, meanwhile, headed off to Cabo for a fun and relaxing getaway with her girlfriends.
Now, People is reporting new details on just how Lea found out the news of her longtime boyfriend’s sudden passing. The mag reports that Lea was a home in her Hollywood bungalow when she received the phone call, celebrating a girl’s night in with her friends.
"Lea started screaming, she was distraught. No one knew what to say. It was horrible. She couldn't believe it," a source tells People.
Knowing that the paparazzi would soon swarm Lea’s house trying to get a photo of the heartbroken star, one of Lea’s friend quickly suggested that she spend the night elsewhere.
Not even 30 minutes later, news of Cory’s death hit the internet, causing a media firestorm. Lea has been laying low ever since, speaking only through her reps and avoiding all public appearances. We can’t even begin to fathom how difficult this must be.
“Lea is obviously very grief-stricken but she’s also one of the strongest people I know,” Glee creator Ryan Murphy said this weekend. “She wants people to be better and get back to work. So that’s what we’re going to do.”
