Prepare for a funeral, both on screen and off. Glee creator Ryan Murphy has spoken: Finn Hudson will die at some point early in Glee Season 5. Ever since actor Cory Monteith died suddenly of a heroin overdose on July 13, fans have been wondering how the actor’s death will be dealt with on the show.

Finn is a core part of the series. Though he hasn’t been around much in recent episodes, his love story with Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) is one of the show’s core dynamics. Rachel is still a main character, and there’s no way fans will buy it if she never speaks to or hears from the love of her life again.

While the show technically could have re-cast the role of Finn, it seemed obvious that they would never go that route. When has a leading character ever been re-cast without major backlash? It’s simply not an option.

No, Finn is going to pass away. “We will then do an episode that will deal with the death of Finn’s character and follow that with a long hiatus,” Ryan told Deadline on July 20. “I don’t know exactly when we will come back, and we are trying our best with this attempt at damage control.”

Somebody pass the tissues. This is going to be an emotional season.
