As we come to terms with Cory Monteith’s (Finn) sudden and shocking death on July 13, we’ve quickly realized that Cory’s passing will forever impact the life of his girlfriend Lea Michele (Rachel).

Glee plans to honor Cory with a tribute episode sometime early in Season 5, and one of the songs we’re hoping they’ll include is a reprise of Elphaba and Galinda’s duet “For Good” from the musical Wicked: “Who can say that I’ve been changed for the better? But because I knew you, I have been changed for good.”

The thing is, being with Cory did change Lea for the better — as People magazine’s most recent print edition explains. In the mag’s July 25 issue, an friend of Lea’s says that the actress’s year- and-a-half relationship with her co-star really did change her.

Numerous friends tell the mag that just like her Glee character, Lea Michele is fiercely driven toward stardom. Cory, on the other hand, was laid back and very down-to-earth, a mindset that began to rub off on Lea for the better.

“He didn’t seem nearly as driven or ambitions as she is,” a friend says. The pal, who has known Lea since her theater days, continues. “Lea is an incredibly talented, supremely intelligent actress. But she is also one of the most complicated women. Cory softened her in a lot of ways. It’s clear that they had something genuine and surprisingly sweet.”

For the rest of her life, we’re sure that Lea will carry the memories of Cory with her. She’s already a star and we’re sure she will long continue to be, but being with Cory has made her an even better person than before.
