Work on Glee Season 5 has officially begun! On Monday, August 5, the cast and crew headed back to work to begin filming. Plenty of them have already taken to Twitter to share their excitement for the new season, but this day hasn’t entirely been full of happiness and gumdrops.

Beloved co-star and friend Cory Monteith (Finn) died of a heroin and alcohol overdose just three weeks ago, and the lack of his presence throughout the season will certainly be noticed.

Darren Criss (Blaine) started off the day by posting an Instagram photo of a McKinley High School classroom. “Annnnnnnnnd back to work,” he wrote.

Kevin McHale (ArtieInstagrammed an up-close selfie that showed him holding a sign for Season 5, and Becca Tobin (Kittytweeted, “First day of school!!!! #GleeSeason5Glee writer Michael Hitchcocktweeted, “So good to see the GLEE family back at McKinley.  :)”

Iqbal Theba (Principal Figgins), too, took to Twitter, but his musing was definitely clouded by thoughts of Cory’s absence. “Back on the set for the 5th yr. Not the same as the last 4. Staying focused will be hard as hell. @GLEEonFOX” he wrote.

The first two episodes of Season 5 will be tributes to The Beatles, while Episode 3 will take on a much more somber note as Glee honors Cory with his own tribute episode. It sounds like we’re in for quite the emotional season!
