On September 22, the 2013 Emmy Awards paid tribute to the late Glee star Cory Monteith (Finn) with a special tribute. His co-star Jane Lynch (Sue) gave a heartwarming speech, in which she called Cory a “beautiful soul.”

“From the first time you saw Cory, he had a star quality and a genuine sweetness that made it impossible not to fall in love with him,” a somber Jane told the audience. She acknowledged that Cory was not perfect, alluding to his struggle with drugs, but maintained that the 31-year-old was one of the most genuinely loving and caring people. So while some have charged that Cory, as a non-Emmy winner, should not have been honored during the ceremony, Jane advocated that Cory very much deserved the tribute.

“To a generation that loved Cory so, please know, this gifted and wonderful man was worthy of all of that love,” she said.

After Jane gave her tribute, a number of Cory’s Glee co-stars took to Twitter to react to her heartfelt speech.
