We’ve grown accustomed to other networks trying to have the kind of success with a musical show that Fox has had with Glee, and frankly, their attempts haven’t been so great. (No offense, Viva Laughlin.) But could the next hit musical series come from blending what we love about Glee with what has been successful for ABC’s hit Once Upon a Time?

The only music-oriented shows to make it to primetime since Glee’s inception in 2009 have been ABC’s Nashville and NBC’s Smash, which was heavily promoted but got its pink slip earlier this year after two quick seasons. Yet with Glee’s own ratings starting to slip, is a new TV musical renaissance upon us to bring new shows to carry the torch?

ABC hopes so, having just bought a pilot called Galavant that will be a comedy musical set in a fairy-tale world. According to Deadline, “Galavant centers on handsome Prince Galavant and his quest for revenge over the King who stole his one true love.” And we’re guessing that all those characters will have some serious pipes.

Can this show become a breakout hit? A musical is always going to be a tough sell, but we’re hopeful about this one. It’s being written by Dan Fogelman who wrote Cars, Crazy Stupid Love, and the upcoming film Imagine co-starring Melissa Benoist (Marley) with original music by Little Mermaid songwriter Alan Menken. And who doesn’t love “Part of Your World”?

If this show doesn’t go, there’s another musical in the works over at E! called Songbyrd. According to TV Line, it’s being created by a former Grey’s Anatomy writer and focuses on two singer-songwriter sisters, one of whom will be played by Rumer Willis.

So do either of these sound like shows you want to watch? Or have you already decided that no musical show could ever possibly measure up to Glee?
