Note: On Halloween 2013 — Thursday, October 31 — Fox re-aired Glee's Cory Monteith tribute: "The Quarterback." Below is Lea Michele's heartbreaking performance of "Make You Feel My Love" from the episode, which originally aired on Thursday, October 10, 2013.
Out of every song in Glee's Cory Monteith tribute episode — Season 5, Episode 3: "The Quarterback" — this is the one that got us the most. Lea Michele's Rachel was absent for most of the episode, but when the late Finn's longtime love (and former fiancee) came back and sung "Make You Feel My Love" in the choir room, we pretty much lost it.
Lea and Cory were dating in real life. Glee creator Ryan Murphy let Lea pick which song she wanted to sing in this episode, and she chose the Bob Dylan song "Make You Feel My Love," as covered by Adele. We know that the song was very personal for the couple, though no one has yet explained the exact reason why.
However, as we listen to the words of this song, it's clear that the singer has feelings for someone who doesn't quite reciprocate them as strongly quite yet. When Lea first started on Glee, she was dating Broadway actor Theo Stockman. Cory later admitted that he "kind of always" had feelings for Lea. It just took her a bit longer to figure out how much she liked him.
"I know you haven't made your mind up yet...I've known it from the moment that we met...No, there's nothing that I wouldn't do; To make you feel my love." It's exactly the sort of song Cory would have sung to Lea. To have her sing it to him, after he has passed, and we know they can never be together again... it really just breaks our hearts.
As you can hear, Lea's performance — featuring just her voice and a piano — is incredibly moving. In fact, we really can't figure out how Lea was able to sound so amazing on the song, considering she was presumably filled with grief to be singing about losing Cory.
So now that you've gotten to hear Lea perform the song, do you think this was the right tune for the show to pick? Or do you wish they had chosen something else?
