Tonight, Glee fans will say goodbye to Finn Hudson, as the cast and crew pay tribute to Cory Monteith and the character he brought to life. But a new interview with father Joe Monteith reveals we almost lost Cory long before he the show ever aired.
In an interview with People, Cory’s father Joe Monteith claims that, during a rare heart-to-heart talk two years ago, Cory opened up to him about a near-death incident in his late teens, caused by a bad reaction to drugs.
“He got a shot to his heart to bring him back, and he was told at that time to use no drugs of any kind because you had your one shot,” his father tells People of the “code blue” incident. The brush with death is reportedly what led Cory to check into rehab the first time around.
The two were estranged for a number of years, following a messy divorce between Joe and Cory’s mother, Ann McGregor. Since Joe and Cory didn’t have the closest of relationships, we’re not sure what to make of his interview.
If it is true, and Cory nearly died once before, it’s unfortunate that his wakeup call at 19 was not strong enough to save him again at 31. It shows the powerful hold on a person that drugs and addiction can have.
