We’re thrilled that so many of our favorite Glee stars are branching into the film world, including Darren Criss (Blaine) in this summer’s Girl Most Likely, Chris Colfer (Kurt) in Struck by Lightning, and Melissa Benoist (Marley) in the upcoming Imagine. And as of next month, you can add one more name to that list!

Alex Newell (Unique) has come a long way since being awarded a role prior to Season 3 of Glee as a runner-up on The Glee Project. Now, Alex is co-starring in the high school dramedy Geography Club, about a group of gay high schoolers who form a club where they can openly discuss what they’re going through. The film hits theaters and VOD on November 15.

“When I first read the script, I was like, ‘Wow, this is gonna open a lot of eyes, and people are gonna see what’s happening in high school with actual teenagers that are gay and even that aren’t gay,’” Alex tells ET Online.

In a clip from the film which also stars Men of a Certain Age’s Scott Bakula, Suburgatory’s Ana Gasteyer, and Hairspray star Nikki Blonsky Alex decides to help out his friend in an unusual way. “We went and got coffee, talked for hours bitch is fierce so I’m gonna be her fake boyfriend until she figures the situation out,” Alex’s character Ike says.

This movie sounds both entertaining and heartfelt, and we’re very excited for Alex as he continues to build his career and branch out. Indeed, his character in this film feels different from what we’re used to from his transgendered, feisty Glee character Unique. Let’s face it: We certainly can’t picture Unique pretending to be anyone’s fake boyfriend.

So it’s great to see a new side to his acting, just so long as we still get to watch him on Glee every week. Keep up the good work, Alex!
