Every once in a while, Glee will take a smash hit pop song and re-interpret it in a different and creative way. Back in Season 2, Blaine sang an acapella version of Katy Perry’s upbeat pop tune “Teenage Dream” and the result was a smash hit in its own right.

Now, Glee is once again taking on some Katy Perry music during tonight’s Season 5, Episode 4: “A Katy or a Gaga,” and they’re mixing things up big time! During the episode, the New Directions perform Katy’s summer hit “Wide Awake.” But instead of the usual fast-paced version, this one is a slow, piano-backed take with a raw, acoustic feel.

Is it different? Absolutely. But that’s what makes it so beautiful. Simply re-creating the famous track would have been easy so we love that Glee took a risk with this new arrangement.

Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), Unique (Alex Newell), Jake (Jacob Artist), and Kitty (Becca Tobin) take the lead vocals, and their performances are full of emotion. We’re hearkened back to Rachel (Lea Michele) and Shelby’s (Idina Menzel) stripped down version of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” back in Season 1. You know... just without all the weird mother-daughter romantic subtext.

Take a listen to Glee’s new version of “Wide Awake” below, then head down to the comments and let us know what you think.
