We all have our own ways of coping with death. The loss of someone close to you is one of the hardest things deal with. Each person handles this tragedy in their own way. Some lash out. Other cut themselves off from the world completely.
Kurt (Chris Colfer) goes and gets a tattoo. And a tongue piercing. It all went down in Glee Season 5 Episode 5: “The End of Twerk.” Still in deep pain over the loss of his step-brother, Kurt decided to go get a tattoo as a way to help jolt himself back into experiencing the world.
He meant for the tattoo to say, “It gets better.” For someone like Kurt, who has dealt with so much bullying for his sexuality, yet managed to come so far, that message of hope made perfect sense.
But what Kurt wrote on the paper was, “It’s get better.” So that is what the tattoo artist put onto his upper back. Yes, “It’s get.” The whole thing was one big, un-backspace-able typo. And it was permanently inked on Kurt’s skin.
Kurt didn’t have enough money to get the tattoo removed, but the gruff-but-friendly artist agreed to add some more to fix it. What he ended up with was: “It’s got Bette Midler.” Yeah, it really doesn’t make sense at all. But who doesn’t love Bette Midler?
Oh, and let’s not forget the best part of the whole thing. Kurt pierced his freaking tongue! The tattoo guy said he’d throw it in for free, and Kurt went with it. Rachel is shocked and incredulous, but Kurt tells her, “I honestly kind of love it.”
At least, we think that’s what he said. It’ll still be hard to understand him for a few days. Gotta wait for all that swelling to go down.
But Kurt stands by his reasons. Like Rachel, he feels like he’s been in a trance since Finn died. “I guess I just needed to be shocked back to life,” he tells her. And there’s nothing like a metal stud going through your tongue to do just that.
