Welcome back, Samcedes! In this week’s issue-filled Glee episode, Kurt ends up in the hospital, while Rachel won’t be hanging a college degree on her wall anytime soon. It’s time for our Season 5, Episode 15: "Bash" recap, so put on your faux fur, and let’s get started.
Rachel Gets an "A" for "Attitude"
The episode begins with a heartfelt candlelight vigil, as we learn that someone was recently attacked in the neighborhood for being gay. Kurt and Blaine discuss the incident over dinner, but Rachel has a lot on her mind and isn’t too fazed by it. Meanwhile, Sam and Mercedes have rekindled things, although Sam doesn’t make the best first impression with her backup singers.
If you’ve noticed that there haven’t been many Glee scenes lately showing Rachel at NYADA, there’s a reason for that. Rachel is low on free time, and her director tells her to stay focused on the show. So after a heated convo with NYADA head honcho Carmen Tibideaux, Rachel decides her NYADA tenure has come to an end. Apparently, school is for chumps.
Three Words: We. Love. Burt.
Rachel and Kurt share some harsh words while out to eat, with Rachel telling Kurt that staying at NYADA would mean playing it safe. Then, as Kurt is walking home, he sees someone else getting attacked for being gay. Kurt tells the assailants to back off, but they end up beating Kurt up, too.
The only good thing to come out of Kurt ending up in the hospital? It means we get another stellar appearance from everyone’s favorite TV dad, Burt Hummel. Kurt's incident leads Rachel to apologize to him, while Mercedes — who had kicked Sam out of the apartment — decides they should instead make things official as a couple! Let’s hope his first move is to buy her a new coat.
Our Favorite Scene of the Episode
The episode definitely deals with serious issues. But it never feels too heavy-handed, not to mention that there are still plenty of lighter moments to balance things out. And we’re loving seeing Samcedes back together, so we really hope Mercedes can remain a permanent cast member. Don’t send her back to L.A. in a few weeks, Glee!
For our “Favorite Scene” Award, we’re selecting — big surprise here! — Burt’s chat with Kurt. Burt warns Kurt to make smart choices and then jokes that the two guys will take on the attackers together. Is there a situation that Burt doesn’t have the perfect answer for? We think not. Seriously, that guy is the absolute best.
For our runner-up scene, we'll go with Blaine's Star Wars rendition. Amazing. And we’re huge Samcedes fans, so third place is their kiss at the end of episode. We’re not sure why the show took this long to get them together, but we’re glad it finally happened. We just hope the show won’t just suddenly forget about their relationship, as it seems to have done with romances lately. (Dantana, anyone?) Come to think of it, whatever happened to Sam’s last girlfriend, Nurse Penny? We might need to send out a search and rescue team for her, stat.
Now, we can’t wait for things to get sexy in next week’s STD-centric episode. Meanwhile, if anyone needs us, we’ll be swimming in the nearest river, looking for discarded coats.
