Lea Michele’s (Rachel) first book, Brunette Ambition, came out yesterday, May 20; and we’ve already told you about some major Glee-related revelations. (Yes, she and Matthew Morrison dated back in the day!) But did you also know that her best friend Jonathan Groff had a frightening health scare not long ago?

Considering he’s been Lea’s best friend since they co-starred in Spring Awakening on Broadway starting in 2006, J. Groff is mentioned many times within the pages of Brunette Ambition, and Lea is sure to note how he’s stuck by her side for years. But the most startling revelation Lea makes about the Looking star is that he once battled skin cancer.

“His doctor told him that if it had gone unchecked, he could have been dead within a few months,” Lea writes. Thankfully, Jonathan is just fine now, but the skin cancer scare did lead him to make a very important promise with Lea. “The cancer was removed, and he’s OK now, but he made me promise to have my moles checked,” she continued.

Thankfully, it looks like Lea is doing more than making good on her promise to Jonathan. Not only does she take excellent care of herself and her own skin, but she’s also encouraging others to do the same in a melanoma PSA released several weeks ago — perfectly timed for the start of Skin Cancer Awareness Month on May 1.

In the PSA, which you can watch below, Lea stresses the importance of wearing sunscreen. “Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. It's hard to imagine, but not wearing sunscreen is just too risky, even for someone with my complexion," she begins. "We've been told not to smoke and not to text while driving, and now we must be told to never forget our sunscreen, regardless of our age or skin type. It's that worth it.”
