Cory Monteith’s (Finn) death in the middle of last summer just before Glee was scheduled to start shooting its fifth season shook the cast and crew to its core and left millions of fans reeling. The FOX dramedy understandably struggled to find its footing in Season 5 after much of it had to be rewritten without Finn, and show co-creator Ryan Murphy recently revealed that he “sort of stepped away from Glee a little bit” after Cory passed away.

Speaking to TVLine at the Critics Choice Television Awards last Thursday, June 19, Ryan continued, “To be honest with you, my heart kind of broke a little bit. It was very difficult, not just for me, but for everybody.”

But Ryan (and the cast and crew) soldiered on and now everyone is looking forward to Season 6, which will be the show’s last. It’s expected to debut early next year. “We’re working on the last season now, and it really feels like it’s getting back to its roots, which I love,” Ryan shared. “I’m sort of reinvigorated about it. It’s getting back to what I was initially interested in with the show, which was arts in school. The last season is really about the importance of arts education in our high schools… I think people will like it.”

So since Ryan mentioned high schools, does that mean we’re headed back to Lima and McKinley? You bet!

Not too long ago fellow EP Brad Falchuk told TVLine that “there will be a lot going on in Lima”, so it looks like Glee will most certainly be headed back to the midwest for its final season.

But what, then, will become of Rachel (Lea Michele)? Last we saw the talented songbird she was headed off to L.A. to film her pilot, but it’s sounding more and more likely that she could end up right back where she started. Maybe she goes back to McKinley to teach like Finn was initially supposed to do? Looks like we’ll have to wait and see!
