Being secretly in love with your best friend is not easy. And when you're gay, while your best friend is straight — that just makes things even more complicated.

Blaine (Darren Criss) has been harboring a crush on his best pal Sam (Chord Overstreet) for a while now, but he’d done his best to hide his feelings, for fear of ruining their friendship.

Then, in Glee Season 4, Episode 17: “Guilty Pleasures," Blaine finally came clean about his crush. Surprisingly enough, Sam took the whole thing exceedingly well. In fact, the news didn’t seem to come as much of a shock at all. Sam doesn’t seem to reciprocate Blaine’s feelings, but but he isn’t weirded out by the confession, either.

“You don’t have to be uncomfortable. Dude, it’s okay. I get it. Your guilty pleasure is me,” he says. “I’ve known all year. And frankly, I’m an attractive guy, and you are into dudes. If you weren’t into me, I’d probably be pretty offended.”

Still feeling a bit embarrassed, Blaine slowly let’s his friend’s words sink in. “You’re not freaked out? Because I don’t want to jeopardize our friendship. I mean, because you’ve been there for me throughout this whole...”

“Stop. Nothing is going to change,” Sam says. “We’re like brothers. I trust you. And you know, like, the attention feels kind of good. It’s flattering.”

Clearly, this isn’t the first time that a gay man has developed feelings for a straight one, and it’s certainly not going to be the last. We love how Glee has chosen to portray a positive and thoughtful way that a straight man can respond. Sam is kind and accepting, but still perfectly clear about his sexuality.

The lines of communication on this topic have now been opened between Sam and Blaine, but the two still want their friendship to stay the same. It’s an excellent example of how to deal with what could have been a very difficult situation.

Of course, all that goodwill and open mindness didn’t keep Glee from throwing in a little erection joke at the end. Sam goes in for a hug, but suddenly gets a very uncomfortable look on his face.

“Um... dude. Please tell me that is a pack of Lifesavers in your pocket,” he says.

Blaine seems totally unfazed by the comment, almost blissfully unaware of its meaning. “Oh, yeah. No, they’re breath mints. Do you want one?”

Well, there you go then.
