Things are moving fast in the life and times of Darren Criss (Blaine) ― and the Glee star says he wouldn’t want it any other way! In the new issue of DETAILS, Darren talks about his rise to the top, his adoring fans, and how he’s been able to balance Glee life with his latest gig on Broadway... kinda.
“I had my homework cut out for me,” Darren tells the mag of transitioning into the role, “Glee is an interesting game. They’ll say, ‘You’re not shooting tomorrow. But you have to record two songs and you have dance rehearsal and you might have a fitting.’ When I wasn’t doing all of that, I tried to have dance rehearsals for How to Succeed.”
As we know by now, Darren’s Broadway debut has been a HUGE success, and it comes as no surprise to us ― or his legions of adoring... female fans, who are showing up at the stage door after his shows, and also were around for that national Glee tour last year!
“What’s funny is that the moms always feel like they have to qualify everything. ‘I’m here for my daughter. Can I get a picture?’ You don’t have to apologize for liking Glee. My joke is, the fans are either 16 or 60. What I wouldn’t give to have someone come back who wasn’t a mom or a teenager.”
And perhaps the strangest part of Darren’s meteoric rise of the last two years? The introductions!
Darren details two intros in particular that threw him a bit... the first with former political hopeful Michele Bachmann ― of whom he said, “It dawned on me that she didn’t know what the hell Glee was.” (snap!) ― and the second to Mariah Carey... by Whitney Houston!
Recalls Darren, “It was at Prince Azim of Brunei’s birthday party in the middle of the English countryside. He’s a fan of Glee. I never thought I would meet Mariah Carey, but I really never thought I’d be introduced to her by Whitney Houston. She’s like, ‘Hey, baby, this is Mariah.’ I’m like, ‘I know. I’m Darren. I don’t know what I’m doing here.’”
Oh Darren, why you gotta be so adorable??
