Who knew that a song about loving ladies’ behinds would cause so much tension?
Rumor has it that the song “Baby Got Back” will appear in Glee Season 4, Episode 11: “Sadie Hawkins.” According to the internet source who leaked a first listen of the track, Kurt's (Chris Colfer) new interest, Adam (Oliver Kieran-Jones), leads a hilarious, borderline-heartfelt version of the early ‘90s novelty rap tune about Oakland booties and anacondas. But is it a bit too similar to someone else’s rendition?
Critics online have pointed out that the supposed Glee version — given the banjo-inflected instrumentals — is nearly identical to a version released by singer-songwriter Jonathan Coulton back in 2005. Seriously, these two versions are eerily similar.
The most telling sign that Jonathan’s version was the influence? In the original version of the song, rapper Sir Mixalot (who we’re pretty sure is not a real knight) sings the line, “Mixalot’s in trouble.” So when Jonathan covered the tune, he substituted his own name, turning it into “Johnny C’s in trouble.”
As you may have guessed, Glee’s version also contains the line “Johnny C’s in trouble.” Oops!
On January 18, Jonathan tweeted this statement addressing the controversy:
