We can probably all agree that no one would nominate Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff) for Boyfriend of the Year, especially the Jesse we knew in previous seasons of Glee.
He’s the sort of guy who values winning above all else. So no matter what his feelings may have been for former girlfriend Rachel (Lea Michele), Jesse’s desire to crush the competition is always going to triumph. Plus, Rachel is totally over him and madly in love with Finn (Cory Monteith).
End of story, right? Not so fast. Jesse returned to Glee during Season 3, Episode 21, "Nationals," and one thing became pretty clear to us by the end of the episode. Rachel may be ready to marry Finn, but Jesse appears to still be very much in love with her!
A far cry from his former scheming self, Jesse was nothing but kind and supportive of Rachel the entire episode. He even wished her and Finn the best and graciously made nice with Finn — something we never thought we’d see from the guys who practically tore each other’s throats out at prom last year!
We kept expecting things to change — for the maniacal, scheming Jesse to suddenly turn on New Directions, but he never did. Instead, Jesse’s main move was to talk up Rachel to Carmen Tibideaux (Whoopi Goldberg) on Rachel’s behalf. If she does make it into NYADA, no doubt his actions will have paid a big role.
Plus, did you catch the look of pain and longing on his face watching Rachel perform Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now”? It seems pretty clear to us that Jesse is still in love with her.
In terms of personality and ambition, it’s hard to deny that Jesse and Rachel are a great match. So would you ever want to see the two of them back together? Or will Finn and Rachel always be the quintessential Glee couple for you?
