Glee manages to pack an insane number of songs into each episode, which means there will always be a few standouts... along with the inevitable dud or two. We've narrowed the performances from Season 3, Episode 11: “Michael,” down to the very best and the coulda-done-without. Do you agree with our picks?
Best Performance of the Night: “Smooth Criminal” by Santana and Sebastian
“Smooth Criminal” and “Scream” were both amazing, but we’re giving the edge to this “thrilling” Santana (Naya Rivera) and Sebastian (Grant Gustin) duet. Sebastian may be a major pain in the neck (or eye), but the guy can sing, plus we of course love any song that allows Santana to both belt it out and get angry at the same time. And we loved the instrumentals, along with Santana hilarious line when she asked the “cello guys” to hang back — because when you think Michael Jackson, you think cellos, right?
Worst Performance of the Night: “Ben” by Kurt, Rachel, and Finn
Finn (Cory Monteith) and Rachel (Lea Michele)’s duet, “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” does drag things down, but it’s “Ben” that feels especially unnecessary. We would much rather have seen the Warblers number that got cut out than this somewhat silly song — originally written about a rat! — to Blaine (Darren Criss) about what a good friend he is. (Cue the group hug.) And we appreciate Finn’s “eye patch movie” collection, but how could he have left off True Grit, Kill Bill, and Escape From New York? (Come to think of it, why the heck are there so many eye patch movies?!)
