Glee Music: The Best and Worst From "Prom Queen"

Glee manages to pack an insane number of songs into each episode, which means there will always be a few standouts along with the inevitable dud or two. We've narrowed the performances from “Prom Queen” down to the very best and the not-so-great. After all, not every Glee cover can be a bestseller on iTunes!

Best Performance of the Night: “Jar of Hearts” by Rachel (Lea Michele)
We came close to giving the top spot to Rachel and Jesse’s (Jonathan Groff) memorable cover of “Rolling in the Deep,” but Glee’s odd arrangement doesn’t quite live up to the oh-so-powerful original. However, we’re blown away by Rachel’s simple-yet-beautiful version of “Jar of Hearts” — especially emotional since it’s aimed at Finn (Cory Monteith) and Quinn (Dianna Agron), who are dancing nearby. Bonus points for that shot of the student who’s dancing while wearing a Bluetooth; it’s not easy to be that lame.

Worst Performance of the Night: “Friday” by Puck (Mark Salling), Artie (Kevin McHale), and Sam (Chord Overstreet)
Was there any doubt as to what the worst performance would be this week? Granted, the glee guys did their best to have fun with it, but calling this a decent version of “Friday” is like saying you drive a really tricked-out Yugo. (Translation: A Yugo is still a Yugo.)

Props to Puck for gamely barking out lyrics that somehow rhyme the words “bowl” and “cereal.” (A note to Rebecca Black: Just because Emily Dickinson used near-rhymes doesn’t mean you can.) Still, Glee’s “Friday” reminds us of watching a star athlete deliver a solid game despite a hurt ankle — you just imagine how great they would be without the impediment. Then again, it’s nice to know we aren’t the only ones who struggle with whether to sit in the front or back seat. Life can be so tough sometimes.
