Glee Project’s Alex Newell: What Damian McGinty and Lindsay Pearce Told Me About Being on Glee — Exclusive!
He hasn’t yet set foot at McKinley High, but last summer’s Glee Project finalist Alex Newell is already a bona fide Gleek. On November 15, when Volume 2 of the Glee Christmas album drops, all the four GP finalists — Lindsay Pearce, Samuel Larsen, Damian McGinty and Alex — will be represented on the record.
“The Christmas album is so good,” Alex told Wetpaint Entertainment in an exclusive interview from Nashville, where he made an appearance at the auditions for the The Glee Project’s second season. ”It's gorgeous. I just heard the song, and I was just like, ‘Ah.’ It's so pretty. I didn't think it would be that pretty.”
Alex will perform “Do You Hear What I Hear” with Lindsay, while Damian tackles “Blue Christmas” and Sam gets to sing “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” with Cory Monteith (Finn) and Mark Salling (Puck).
Though it’s a well-deserved perk for the contestant that made it to the Top 4, the fact that Alex is now part of pop culture history hasn’t quite sunk it yet. If you had told him a year ago that his voice would be featured on a Glee album, his response would have been a little less than credulous.
“I would have told you, you were stupid,” he says. “I would have told you, you were crazy and stupid. Yeah, life can change at the drop of a hat.”
The biggest change is still in the making. Alex has a two-episode arc on Glee that is rumored to be happening sometime next year. Though his soon-to-be co-star, Amber Riley (Mercedes) has hopes of him playing her character’s cross-dressing brother, Alex insists that he’s still in the dark about his Season 3 role.
“I haven't heard anything. I feel so left out,” he says, adding that he called Lindsay (who's had one ep as Harmony) and Damian (who plays foreign exchange student Rory) after their tapings to find out as much as he could about their experiences. “I just want to know what it's like to work with everybody and see what they're like. And is it as fun as we all dreamed it could be?”
Well lucky for him and other dreamers like him, the answer is: yes. “They’re saying it's everything and more that we wanted. It's like, ‘Thanks for telling me that. Now, I really want to go.’”
