Glee manages to pack an insane number of songs into each episode, which means there will always be a few standouts... along with the inevitable dud or two. We've narrowed the performances from Season 3, Episode 8: “Hold On to Sixteen,” down to the very best and the coulda-done-without. After all, not every Glee cover can be a bestseller on iTunes!

Best Performance of the Night: “We Are Young” by New Directions

Rather than picking between the two stellar Sectionals performances from New Directions and Troubletones, we decided to choose the song that finally brought the two groups together and provided the episode’s most memorable, tear-jerking moment. It was a blast to have Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Santana (Naya Rivera) back belting out notes with their old friends, and that shot of Rachel (Lea Michele) and Santana holding hands was the icing on an already-delicious cake. Long story short: This is what Glee is all about. (But, uh, does this mean Sugar is part of New Directions, too?)

Worst Performance of the Night: “Red Solo Cup” by Sam

This one was fun enough, and the lyrics were appropriate for Sam (Chord Overstreet)’s story, but the vocals were a little blah — especially compared to all those splashy Sectionals numbers. We were expecting so much more from Trouty Mouth’s triumphant return, as we’re not even sure that this is our favorite Glee song about a drink receptacle (Brittany’s “My Cup,” anyone?). However, we did love the puzzlement on Kurt (Chris Colfer)’s face as he examined that red cup, as if it were a moon rock or something. (Loosen up, bro!)
