Glee’s Marley (Melissa Benoist) is pretty darn adorable now, so just imagine what she looked like as an adorable tyke! Luckily, we won’t really have to imagine for much longer.
An upcoming episode will show a flashback to Marley as a child at around age 7 or 8, according to E! Online. The flashback will provide a glimpse at what Marley’s relationship with her mom was like back in the day. No word on whether Marley was already wearing newsboy caps as a kid, but we’ll find out once and for all when the episode airs.
As cute as this sounds, it will have a tough time beating Glee’s all-time cutest scene involving child actors: Schue’s fantasy sequence involving all of the New Directions members as grammar school versions of themselves in Season 2, Episode 7: “The Substitute.” Seriously — that was basically the definition of the word “adorable.”
However, not all the upcoming Marley news is so gosh-darn adorable. Glee creator Ryan Murphy tells Inquirer Entertainment that we’ll also be learning more about Marley’s ongoing battle with eating disorders. “We’ve never really told a story of young girls in our society, body images and weight preconceptions and the pressures of those,” Ryan says.
Ryan explains that Marley’s concern with her weight stems from the way that people have treated her mom. “We see how tormented her mother has become,” Ryan says. “We really get into some heavy stuff with Marley where we talk about bulimia and anorexia.”
While Glee has dealt with issues involving weight in the past — with Mercedes and the Cheerios — it’s true that the show hasn’t really focused on an eating disorder in a serious way. And given that this is an issue that many young people struggle with, we’re curious to see how Glee tackles it.
