By now, it seems pretty clear that Ryder (Blake Jenner) scored the leading role of Danny in McKinley’s production of Grease. We’ve seen four different photos that show him standing atop the car, and wearing Danny’s signature leather jacket, during the guys’ performance of “Greased Lightning.”
Yet when FOX released their official photos of the “Greased Lightning” performance, we couldn’t help but notice one face we weren’t expecting to see on stage with them at all: Finn (Cory Monteith)!
Finn is directing this year’s musical, so we never would have expected he’d join the actors on stage to perform it, too. Yet there he is, clearly sitting on the hood of the car in front of Ryder. We’ve heard the song, too, and it definitely sounds like Finn might be singing along on the track.
So what gives? Did Finn cast himself in his own play? Possibly, but there could be another explanation. One of the new photos shows Finn dressed in a jumpsuit at what appears to be his dad’s auto shop.
Perhaps the “Greased Lightning” scene isn’t part of the final play at all — but a dream sequence in which the New Directions sing the song while fixing up their own car for the show. After all, Glee can’t possibly show the entire musical on stage during the episode. They’ve got to mix it up a bit. Sounds like the perfect opportunity for a dream sequence to us!
