Glee’s characters have dealt with plenty of violence over the years, between Santana slapping Finn, Sebastian’s rock-salt slushie, and various dumpsters tosses. But it sounds like the threat of violence might soon be taken to the next level.
We had previously heard a rumor that a gun might go off at McKinley in the next new episode, Season 4, Episode 18: “Shooting Star” — with the word “shooting” in the title referring to a gunshot. And now a new Fox press release about the episode appears to confirm the rumor, according to Carter Matt.
According to the press release, “The members of New Directions are prepping for Regionals, but when an unthinkable event occurs at McKinley High, perspectives are put into order.”
Gasp! The thought of guns at McKinley is totally freaking us out. And just how “unthinkable” of an event are we talking here? Previously, we had heard that no one would be hurt, so we’re hoping that’s still the case.
The episode also seems to be an Ohio-centric one, as Chris Colfer (Kurt) and Lea Michele (Rachel) are not currently listed as appearing in it. And while this is definitely a bummer, it makes sense that the show will need all the time it can get to properly address such a serious issue.
We’re curious to see how the gunshot is handled, since the country is still reeling from the tragic school shooting in Newtown last year. We can see some people wondering if this storyline is coming too soon after the real-life events — but then again, Glee has never been a show to avoid controversy.
Also, it’s probably best if this is one event that the characters don’t express their feelings about through song. In other words, let’s hope the show doesn’t do Bon Jovi’s “Shot Through the Heart” or Cher’s “Bang Bang” anytime soon.
