Get ready to swoon ladies, because Artie (Kevin McHale) and Blaine (Darren Criss) are about to sing Justin Bieber’s hit, “Boyfriend.” Glee’s version of the hit Bieber tune airs in Season 4, Episode 2, and it’s arranged as a mashup with Britney Spears’ “Boys.”

Wetpaint Entertainment spoke exclusively with Kevin McHale at the FOX Fall Eco-Casino Party on September 10, and the Glee star was full of juicy teasers about the upcoming duet. Plus, Kevin dishes on how Season 4 premiere’s epic performance of “Call Me Maybe” actually got a little bit... violent?

Wetpaint Entertainment: Where do we find the glee club at the beginning of Season 4?
Kevin McHale: It’s fresh off their win. They’re popular. Everybody knows the glee club, nobody’s mad at them or making fun of them.

They’re a bit mean.
It’s gone to their heads a bit. But they’re fractured, a little bit, because they won with everybody and now everybody’s not there. It’s a really small group. I remember the first choir room scene. I’m like, “This is it?” There’s a whole new vibe, it was very strange.

And then we get all these new talented people. They are super, super nice and Jacob [Artist (Jake)]’s voice is insane. I heard him sing and I was like, “Yes!” And they all can dance, they all can sing, they all can act.

Do you think it felt weird for them?
I don’t know. It may be easier for them because there’s less of us now. I think before it might have been more intimidating. But I think it’s nice because they can rely on us to show them the ropes and they bring a whole new fresh energy into it, so it’s give and take.

In the new Britney Spears tribute, you and Darren Criss (Blaine) are singing a mashup of Britneys’s “Boys” and Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend”?
In true form I seem to do all these boyband numbers. It’s a given. It’s fun. It’s actually a great mashup and it works so well together. I don’t know how they thought of that. But Darren and I had never done a number together, so we were just so excited to have a duet.

Can you tell us what the context of “Boys”/”Boyfriend” is in the episode?
We’re trying to do an inspired performance to help another member of the glee club who maybe down on his or herself.

Were you sad to miss “Call Me Maybe,” since you were the judge of that
number?
They got to perform for me! It’s a really fun number and it was some of the funniest stuff I’d ever seen because they were pushing each other – like Heather [Morris (Brittany)] was just shoving them, battling for the spotlight.

I just had to sit there and laugh. Those were my favorite days where I was like, “Impress me!” Off screen, make me laugh, on screen, make me choose you!
